A soft sparkly pale lemon in the glass, hints of gold. The nose presents at first spiced oak – toasted French oak, aniseed, white pepper, touches of nutmeg, fresh vanilla bean. It’s still so young! Beneath it is salted preserved lemons, crunchy red apple, wet limestone, something like nougat, almond meal and pistachios. The palate is textural and intense – the fruit leaving behind a lemon curd/marzipan flavour in the mouth. The acid keeps this wine tight and together, the fruit characters are long. It needs time for all of the components to come together, but this has textural complexity and concentration of flavour in spades – this will be perfect for drinking in a year or two, and live for many beyond that.
